A growing body of evidence is suggesting muscle metabolism may also play a role
in the prevention of many chronic diseases, such as type-2 diabetes and
osteoporosis. However, research shows current protein recommendations may not go
far enough to contribute to healthy muscle development.
Sarcopenia is a condition associated with a loss of muscle mass and strength in
older individuals. Prevention of this debilitating disease is especially
important to ensure people can continue to live well and independently since
loss of muscle can decrease stamina, lessen the ability to perform daily tasks
and lead to an increased risk of falls and bone fractures. While there is no
single cause, insufficient protein intake may be a key contributor to this
condition, which can significantly compromise overall quality of life as we age.
See the attached tip sheets for additional information, as well as some keys to
prevention.
