Ohio farm reclaims land that was once mined into strong, healthy grassland

In Belmont, Ohio, is the Young Cattle Company owned by Rick and Jayne Young. In 1995 they started their farm in southeast Ohio and began the hard work of restoring the natural ecosystem. Much of their land was once strip mined for coal, leaving little to no forage for cattle to graze. Through their efforts, they were able to reclaim the soil health turning the once barren hills into lush pastures where animals thrive. The Youngs worked with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to install fences around the farm to section off different pastures for rotational grazing as well as to help keep cattle out of the streams and ponds. The ranch uses recycled tires to store drinking water for the cattle that is delivered to these tanks through pressurized water lines throughout the farm. The work the Youngs have done on their ranch has also helped the local wildlife by keeping cattle out of heavily wooded areas and also providing natural food sources through their efforts of restoring vegetation to the area. In fact, both the Ohio Senate and House have commended Young Cattle Company for their environmental stewardship efforts. The Youngs were also awarded the prestigious Environmental Stewardship Award (ESAP).

"It's a great feeling to know that you have a place that's peaceful and quiet and can walk the fields, look the cows over and don't have a worry in the world, just clouds above you and green grass all around." - Rick Young, Owner, Young Cattle Company
